Announcing auditions for "Once Upon A Mattress," the musical to be put on by the Calumet Players, Sept 10, 11, 16, 17, & 18. Auditions will be held June 28, 29, & 30 at 7pm in the Calumet Players Building. Parts are available to men and women ages 14 and up. Everyone who auditions will be asked to sing a song of their choice, and to read a part. There is a Troupe Family Show this Saturday (October 3rd) in MUB Ballroom A on Tech's Campus. Many people may be interested, since there were 5 current Troupers in Music Man, and Adam (Harold) was a Troupe Alum. We're even doing one or two short bits that are parodies of Music Man Songs. Auditions for Red Metal Radio Show will be held Wednesday, July 15, 6:00 9:00 p.m., at the Merchants & Miners Building, 200 Fifth Street in downtown Calumet. The Merchants & Miners Building is located at the intersection of Fifth & Portland Streets. Use either the 4th or 5th Street entrances. The Main Street Calumet live radio-theatre production, hosted by present-day narrator/host Oren Tikkanen, is a local history variety show loosely based on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. Show date is Thursday, August 13, 2009 starting sharp at 7:00 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre and aired LIVE on Eagle Radio!! Dress rehearsal will be Wednesday, August 12 with other rehearsal dates to be announced. Show is based on talking with people in Calumet (Red Jacket) 100 years ago, including various ethnic groups of that time (so it will be helpful if you could recreate the speech/dialects of that time for example, Slovenian, Italian, Ojibwe, Irish, Cornish, Finnish ...). Spoken vignettes/stories will alternate with ethnic music by regional musicians. This program is part of Main Street Calumet's Calumet Heritage Celebration. Main Street Calumet is sponsoring the Red Metal Radio Show, in conjunction with the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Eagle Radio is a media partner. This activity is supported by the Copper Country Community Arts Council and is a program of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Community supporters include the KNHP Archives, the Finlandia Archives, and Range Bank. It was a dark and stormy night in 1951...seven shots rang out, piercing the brittle silence of the Lumberjack Tavern in Big Bay, MI. In seconds, the life of Mike Chenoweth, a former state police officer, sharpshooter, and owner of the tavern -- was gone in a pool of blood. Seven holes pierced his body, one in the center and six more in a perfect circle around it. Lt. Coleman A. Peterson, a U.S. Army officer stationed at the anti-aircraft artillery range near Big Bay, would be tried for murdering Chenoweth, in revenge for allegedly raping Peterson's wife. He was successfully defended by John Voelker, a local attorney who would later become a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and under the pen-name of Robert Traver, would write his now famous novel: Anatomy of a Murder. OK, so maybe it wasn't a dark and stormy night, but the rest of the story is true and helped make Otto Preminger's brutally dramatic 1959 black and white movie Anatomy of a Murder, an American classic. A stage play based on the book was written by Elihu Winer and will be produced by the Calumet Players on May 14, 15, and 16, 2009 at 7:30 PM, in the Calumet Theatre, in Calumet MI. The cast is all Players veterans and the list is available on the Calumet Players Web site at www.cplayers.org. The play is as honest and dramatic as the book, a bit less complicated than the movie, and a true picture of the rough and tumble nature of mid-20th century American jurisprudence. Don't miss this uniquely dramatic event upon the 50th anniversary of shooting the movie in Marquette, Big Bay, Ishpeming, and Michigamme in 1959. In conjunction with this show we will be raffling off an autographed copy of the novel by Robert Traver. Tickets will be available at each production and the cost is $1.00 per ticket or 6 for $5.00.
