Play Readers Needed

Steve Feffer is coming to the Calumet Theatre as part of the UP Book Tour on Friday 6 July at 7:30. He will read two of his one act plays and has asked us to find folks to take parts. We have scripts and there will be a read through late in the afternoon of the day of the performance.

Here is some background info about Steve Feffer:

Steve Feffer has a Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.F.A. in Playwriting from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, and a BFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University. At Western Michigan University, he teaches graduate and undergraduate playwriting, contemporary drama and dramaturgy, and co-teaches Western's New Play Project.

Steve's plays have been produced or developed by theatres that include the O'Neill National Playwrights Conference (NY and CT), Ensemble Studio Theatre (NY), Philadelphia Festival Theatre, Stages Repertory Theatre (Houston), Ruckus Theatre (Chicago) and the National Jewish Theatre (Chicago). His publications include The Wizards of Quiz (Dramatists Play Service); and "Little Airplanes of the Heart" in Best American Short Plays 1997-1998 (Applause Books) and Plays from Ensemble Studio Theatre 2000 (Faber and Faber). Additional plays have been published by Heinemann Books and New Issues Press.

Steve's research interests include theatre and popular music, and Jewish theatre. His writing on theatre and performance have been published in the Journal of Popular Music Studies, Prooftexts: The Journal of Jewish Literary History, Comparative Drama and Third Coast; and by Palgrave/Macmillan in Interrogating America Through Theatre and Performance. Steve has won a number of national playwriting awards including the New Jewish Theatre Project Grant from the Foundation for Jewish Culture for Ain't Got No Home and Southwest Plays national award for a play for young audience for The House I Call Love. At Western, Steve received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Award. Steve serves as Chair for the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival's National Playwriting Program (region III).

His play ³Little Airplanes of the Heart² was published in Best American Short Plays 1997-98 and in Plays from the Ensemble Studio Theatre 2000 (Faber and Faber), and has been produced at regional, university, high school and community theatres around the country. Other publications include The Wizards of Quiz (Dramatists Play Service); Heinemann Books and New Issues Press publish additional plays and performance pieces. Steve has won a number of national playwriting awards including the New Jewish Theatre Project Award from the Foundation for Jewish Culture for Ain¹t Got No Home and the Southwest Plays Award for a Play for Young Audiences for The House I Call Love. Steve is a professor in the Creative Writing Program at Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI), where he directs the graduate and undergraduate playwriting programs. He has served as a regional Chair for the National Playwriting Program of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

³And YetŠ² was presented in February 2011 as part of the Gwen Frostic Series at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. This version of the play was first developed and staged in the Cafe Ypsilon Theatre in Prague, Czech Republic, as part of WMU¹s Prague Summer Program at Charles University. An earlier version of ³And YetŠ² was commissioned and premiered as part of Burning Love, Short Plays Inspired by Shakespeare¹s Sonnets, at the Whole Art Theatre, Kalamazoo, MI (Tucker Rafferty, Producing Artistic Director) and featured Steve Feffer, Max Hardy, Eli Rix and Sarah MacClean, directed by Martie Philpot.
